About the project
A Project by Natac
Our group is a leading biotechnology-based company specialised in the research, development, production, and commercialisation of high added-value bioactive ingredients from biomass to serve the needs of different industrial sectors.
The primary objective of the AQUOLIVE project is to develop and launch an innovative additive from a natural source that the salmon aquaculture industry will use to increase fish resilience and quality in a cost-effective way.
The European Commision Supports Aquolive
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 830202.
The problem
Why Aquolive?
Fish demand increases
Fish demand is estimated to increase 30% by 2030 due to the fast world population growth.
Aquaculture is intensified
Aquaculture production will need to grow by 50% from its present level to meet such demand.
Fish feeding sources
For aquaculture to be sustainable in 2050, it is estimated that the amount of fish used in feed has to be reduced by at least 50% from current levels.
Plant derived diets
The alternative of land-based crops has been favoured due to their relatively low costs and sustainability, however it is a partial solution.
PRODUCTIVITY PROBLEM
Fish farmers lose productivity and profitability
Plant-based substitutes have demonstrated partial capacity to support fish growth, however they compromise fish meat nutritional quality, and increase the use of hazardous medications.
THE SOLUTION
Aquolive, a solution for fish farmers
Aquolive Project aims to offer a high-performance feed additive based on our patented formulation of bioactive phytochemicals obtained from olive trees.
This solution will help salmon farmers to increase their productivity and profitability, while reducing the use of hazardous antimicrobial compounds and medications in intensive aquaculture practices.
POTENtIAL BENEFITS
What will we achieve?
AQUOLIVE will be sold as a cost-effective and high-performance
feed additive obtained from by-products of olive trees.
Increase productivity and profitability
Improve salmon meat quality for human consumption
Boost fish wellness and resilience
Enhance animal health and welfare
Make aquaculture sustainable

CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Aquaculture sustainability: A Global & Increasing Challenge
Aquolive project will boost aquaculture sustainability through a link between olive farmers from southern Europe and Norwegian salmon producers, by the valorisation of olive biomass, and the improvement of salmon quality and productivity, in a circular economy basis.
